ABOUT THE PROJECT
VISWAP campaign for a clean, safe, fair, transparent, and accountable fashion industry. We do this through design research and education. On the occasion of Fashion Revolution week, which happens every year during the anniversary of the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse, we were involved in the organization of co-design workshops and exhibitions. However, due to uncertain times such as our current global pandemic, all events were postponed, and consequently, we have created this virtual space where everyone can take part in digital activism and make their contribution to shaping a fairer world.
The global lockdown forced us to slow down and reflect on how our current rhythms can affect the fashion slow movement, which would go beyond the Fashion Revolution week by creating a virtual space for knowledge exchange, the possibility to foster social cohesion and growth as human beings and communities. Here the perticipants can take part in four thematic workshops, which will take place ones a month.
Within the first workshop, each participant brings a garment and shares its story with other participants. Based on the stories, participants choose a garment to make a swap and start ideating a solution to improve it with the owner of the garment. Some tools are presented by the workshop conductors and the participants are asked to make their own tools at home for the next workshop.
1. STORIES EXCHANGE
02. TOOLS EXCHANGE
Within our second meeting, we will list the sewing tools (like the sewing machines, needles, yarns, embroidery hoops, etc.) that the participants have at home. We will analyze them together and will try to recreate them with the materials we have at home. The collection of DIY tools will be exhibited in the digital gallery and will become a source of inspiration for designers which will provide the files with redesigned digitally fabricated tools through open-source virtual space.
03.SKILLS
EXCHANGE
A collective making activity is done by using the self-made tools, while the workshop conductors explain mending techniques to apply. Participants also share their own knowledge about different techniques and every participant applies these techniques on their garments.
04. REFLECTION EXCHANGE
After receiving the garments, the participants share the results with others. They make reflections on the experience, answering questions like What did we learn? What did we really exchange in the end? How did we feel when we receive the garment?
